Sofie Švejdová

Painter Sofie Švejdová (*1990) is one of the most outstanding talents of the current generation of Czech visual artists. In March 2018, her paintings caught attention at the prestigious VOLTA art fair in New York, and this success subsequently brought Sofie Švejdová's name to the forefront of the contemporary art scene both in the Czech Republic and abroad. The Plzeň native graduated from the High School of Design in Prague, completed an internship at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, and in 2014, she finished her studies at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (studio of painting under Stanislav Diviš and Jiří Černický). During her studies, she experimented with various media, creating not only paintings and drawings but also sculptures and installations. She eventually settled on paintings, initially exploring the theme of television series and through them, she transitioned from narration to abstraction and now focuses primarily on large-format abstract painting. Her direct and spontaneous painting style challenges clichés about female creation. Her expressively conceived brushwork sometimes carries a significant dose of ironic distance, while at other times, it reveals a deep inner passion.

For Sofie, motifs that can be identified with reality are merely a means for an intense confrontation with color masses, while her painting unfolds in a dynamic composition where triumphant color harmonies emerge. The way in which she works with materials and layers of color creates an impression of at times elusive dynamism and at other times, immeasurable depth and a physical experience, transporting the viewer from a mere two-dimensional surface into the space of a three-dimensional artwork. In this way, Sofie Švejdová transcends traditional boundaries of painting and creates a visual experience that physically and aesthetically completes the viewer's interaction with the artwork.
